Tips on choosing the Best shampoo/conditioner brand

Here are some tips on how to choose a shampoo & conditioner that actually works!

If you find yourself walking up and down the beauty aisle, trying to decide which bottle to pick, just ask yourself this question – Does this shampoo/conditioner have the ZING?
So what does ZING really mean!
Zero Sulphates – SLS/SLES are harsh detergents that strip your scalp of its natural oils and cause irritation, dry brittle hair and in extreme cases aggravate existing atopic dermatitis. Silicones are cosmetic ingredients that cover your hair with a thin, waterproof coating that can build up over time making your hair weaker and more prone to breakage. Avoid products with Sulphates like TEA lauryl sulphate, Sodium Laureth, Lauryl Sulphate, Ammonium lauryl sulphate. Nasties like Disodium EDTA, Cocamide DEA, Behentrimonium Chloride and Silicones like Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Cetyl Dimethicone and others.
Ideal pH – A pH-balanced shampoo ensures that your scalp does not produce too much oil after you shampoo. It also keeps your hair cuticles closed preventing frizz and reducing static. The ideal pH of your shampoo should be between 3.5 and 5 which is the pH of your scalp. With higher pH products the risk of scalp irritation is high since it makes your scalp more alkaline. For color-treated hair if your shampoo has a pH above 5.5, your hair cuticle will open causing your color to fade much faster. Majority of the shampoo bars have a pH of over 9 which is way too alkaline for your hair leaving your hair dry and frizzy after wash. Our shampoo & conditioner are expertly formulated at the ideal pH range for hair and scalp.
Natural Cleansers – Shampoos are used primarily to clean the scalp of dirt, sebum, sweat and other greasy residues including previously applied hair care products such as oils, lotions and sprays. The challenge is to remove just enough sebum to allow the hair to appear clean and leave behind enough conditioning agents to leave the hair soft, shiny and manageable. This balancing act between good cleaning and beautifying the hair is an art achieved by mixing various ingredients in the correct proportion in the shampoo preparation. Look out for formulations that use modern advances in chemistry and technology to replace the soap bases with complex formulation which contain cleansing agents, conditioning agents along with functional additives & natural preservatives. We use Coco-Glucoside in Olio Divina Shampoo which is a ECOcert and COSMOS certified natural and encourages scalp health, smooth the follicles and promote shine. The formulation also uses Acacia concinna aka Shikakai and Amla which are essential for healthy and rapid hair growth.
Green formulation – Healing botanical & plant extracts have an impact on the health of the scalp and hair. So ensure that you pick a range that is made of plant based ingredients and vitamin powered botanicals. Also avoid products with ‘parfum’ as it could be an artificial fragrance and also look out for artificial colors which can irritate your roots and scalp. The Ovviovita range of shampoo & conditioner have plenty of high quality soothing botanicals, clarifying herbs & nourishing oils which refresh and revitalise hair. Your locks will feel repaired and strengthened after every use. Also leaving the shampoo to soak into the hair for a few extra minutes ensures that the active ingredients are absorbed by the scalp. A lot of our customers also find that they do not need to use a separate conditioner.
